Ringing the Back Bells

I am always happy to ring one of the smaller bells – the lighter the better.  I learnt to ring on very small bells and have always enjoyed them.  Many people find light bells difficult and flighty.  I believe the front bells are usually harder to strike well than the back bells – there is a real skill to holding them off the heavy bells just the right amount and great pleasure to be had in doing it well.  Bashing the heavy bells around and expecting everyone else to make space for you is easy by comparison.  In my tower I have often seen those who generally ring round the back catching hold at the front and remarking afterwards how difficult it is.  It is.
